About me:
I am an elementary school teacher and I am currently working towards my Masters in Instructional Technology/Media Center (dual certification). I love kids and I love to teach in the classroom, but I would love to support the classrooms through technology. I have one semester left and I am excited to be near the end. Currently I am a substitute teacher. I wanted to have flexibility while I obtained my graduate degree. Teaching is my second career. Before I had my children, I worked in the business world. After I had my children I realized.....I absolutely love spending time with kids. My previous position was a fifth grade teacher with an inclusion classroom. I learned as much from the students as they learned from me. My classroom had 10 special education students with different learning and behavior disorders. Technology became a big part of my curriculum because different technology could reach different students. I decided to continue my education and expand my knowledge of instructional technology. |
My Philosophy:
"We should spend less time ranking children and more time helping them identify their natural gifts, and cultivate those. There are hundreds of ways to succeed and many, many different abilities to get there."
-Howard Gardner
I enjoy teaching. I think teaching is one profession that encourages personal and professional growth on a regular basis. Every child deserves an equal education and a teacher that understands his or her individual needs. Every child learns differently and every child has unique strengths. I think children deserve to feel smart and valued for being individual.
I believe that students need a strong foundation in the classroom to reach their potential. A strong foundation consists of comfort, confidence, and acceptance. A student must feel valued in the classroom to take risks, try new activities, and push themselves out of their comfort zone.
The Media Specialist at a school has the opportunity to create an environment where the students and the staff feel comfortable. The Media Specialist can create a learning environment that promotes growth and collaboration. The 21st Century library has the tools to teach students how to be successful in the present and the future. I think the Media Center in any school should be viewed as the learning hub. The Media Specialist should be the information expert that supports the students and staff.
Intellectual freedom is an important responsibility of a school Media Specialist. " School librarians play a key role in making sure that students have the broad range of resources and ideas they need to develop critical thinking skills. Challenges to materials provide a “teachable moment” that can help you build understanding and support for the principles of intellectual freedom, including First Amendment rights, student rights of access and professional ethics." (American library Association, 1999). I believe school materials should be screened for appropriate content. Schools should not offer materials with adult content such as extremely graphic material. However, a media center has the responsibility to offer materials that represent different cultures, ethnicity, and religions. In order to be the information hub of a school, a Media Center must offer materials that represent the world.
Technology is the future of our education system. Technology ofers individualized education and diversity in the education system. Instructional technology is as important as the education curriculum and the standards. I want to be an Instructional Technology Specialist because I want to use technology to reach every student.
