I created my Face-to-Face Professional Development to promote the use of technology. An Instructional Technology Specialist is responsible for professional development of the teachers and the staff. Educating teachers is as important as educating the students. The Information Technology Specialist is the central information expert for the school and the community. Because I am a classroom teacher, I understand the busy schedules inside and outside the classroom. Planning lessons and managing the classroom are vital and time consuming. I wanted to create a lesson that did not waste the valuable time of the teachers. My goal was to teach the teachers about helpful technology tools and represent myself as a technology resource they can collaborate with. My professional unit introduces the teachers to pearltrees.com, smore.com, and RSS feeds. Pearltrees.com is a valuable curation tool that an individual teacher can utilize or an entire grade level can use to collaborate. I use Pearltrees for my PLN. Smore.com is an easy way to arrange information in one place and share it. RSS feeds are a great resource for new ideas. My professional development lesson promotes Element 5.2 because I developed and implemented an adult learning lesson to support best practices in teaching. Before the staff development workshop I sent a pre-assessment questionnaire.
The pre-assessment was sent to the eight teachers who participated:
None of the teachers have experience with Pearltrees.
Three of the teachers have experience with Smore.com
None of the teachers have used RSS feeds.
All of the teachers use collaboration to plan lessons and units.
Email is the only technology tool used to collaborate.
All teachers use email.
All the teachers are interested in using technology to collaborate as long as the technology is not complicated.
I tailored my online unit using the pre-assessment results. I wanted the unit to be easy and beneficial.
The post assessment results:
All of the teachers were interested in Pearltrees and Smore.com. They liked the curation and the collaboration. I received positive feedback on the presentation. The teachers thought the websites were easy to use. They enjoyed the step-by-step instructions. I aked them to log into each website and create accounts together as a group. The teachers were unsure if they would use these tools as a grade level for collaboration but they would use them individually.
This assignment was the most stressful for me. I was nervous about teaching adults. Professional development is an important part of the Instructional Technology Specialist job. I had to conquer this fear. This assignment helped me move from my role as a classroom teacher into an administrative role that supports teachers as well as students.
In FRIT 7232 I was in a small group that evaluated a current technology plan. The Technology Plan Evaluation consisted of an annotated biography and a complete evaluation. Our group evaluated the Farmington Public Schools 2012-2015 Technology Plan. This assignment had two key portions that helped me develop my knowledge as an Informational Technology Specialist. The annotated biography was a group effort to create the best resources and examples of thorough technology plans. I found individual resources and I learned about other strong resources from my group. The plan evaluation helped me determine my own ideas about a strong technology plan. I was able to analyze each section of the plan. I also determined if each thorough enough to represent an entire school district. I had a hardworking team and i learned from each of them as we worked together. The Technology Plan Evaluation represents Element 5.1 because I determined the strengths and weaknesses of the technology programs for Farmingthon School District. The assignment also represents Element 5.3 because our group evaluated the technology plan for teacher and student learning.
One of my practicum assignments was evaluating a media Center at my primary site. I completed my Technology Program Administrator assignment at Alpharetta high School. I struggled with this assignment. I was overwhelmed with the amount of information I could include in the report. In order to complete the assignment for the entire school I needed to expand my view from a specific group of students/teachers to the entire school. I also had to look at the Media Center objectively. Alpharetta High School has an impressive collection of technology resources. The Media Specialist is knowledgeable and I have a large amount of respect for her. I chose to combine observations, questionnaires, and date to ensure my results were objective. Once I had my plan for completing the assignment I enjoyed the process. I enjoyed looking at the data and the questionnaires. I was able to combine data and opinions to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the Media Center. I was also able offer suggestions to the Media center Specialist. She values my opinion and she has specific elements she would like to see improved in the Media Center. This assignment represents Element 5.3 because I evaluated an entire program with the entire school in mind. My objective behind the assignment was creating a list of ideas for using the Media Center to improve school wide learning.
