I began my week at Creek View Elementary School. Creek View is different from my other two sites because this school does not have 1:1 technology. An important portion of the Media/Technology specialist at the middle & high schools is support for the Microsoft Surface. Creek View has scheduled classes that rotate through the Media Center. The Media Center is treated as a special class like art or PE. Creek View Elementary has changed to Project Based Learning (PBL) curriculum. The Media Specialist works with the PBL chair for each grade level to create lessons that support the classroom curriculum. This month the Media Center Specialist is teaching the 4th & 5th grade classes about Microsoft Sway and Office 365. Both grades will use Sway for reports and projects. Office 360 is a program that the students will regularly use in Middle School. This month the 3rd grade is learning about basic research. The Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd grades are learning about Pebble go, which is a simple database for learning facts and research. I am looking forward to spending more time in the elementary school. The Media Center has an interactive white board and desktop computers to support the students and the staff.
The Media Center Specialist is also the producer of the CNN morning show at Creek View. On Monday, Wednesday, & Friday the morning show is broadcasted over the interactive white boards in the classroom. Different students are chosen to discuss school news, lunch choices, and weather. I watched the Media Specialist produce the CNN morning show. She has a group of students that are her "tv crew' and they are responsible for the lighting and the camera. I love the idea of using students to create the show. I enjoyed watching.
This week I helped in the Alpharetta High School Media Center during Anchor Time. Anchor Time is new to the school. Anchor Time is a one hour period on Tuesdays & Thursdays to work in small groups. Students who need remediation are assigned to a teacher. Special groups are given extra time together. The large area of the Media Center is used for small groups and remediation. The project rooms are used for various clubs. There is on technology based club that meets in the Media Center and offers IT support in the Media Center. TESLA (Technologically Enhanced Student Learning Assistants) is an after school club that works with technology. During Anchor time they meet in the Media Center. During free periods they are a Help desk for the Microsoft Surface.
