This week I learned about the new Breakot Boxes. The AHS Media Center ordered three boxes for the classrooms. The Media Specialist asked me to research the boxes, write an explanation, and find sample lessons. I have not heard of these before and I really enjoyed this task. I also created St. Patrick's Day key chains with the 3D printer. Below is the information I wrote about the Breakout Boxes. I researched new books for the high school level. I completed a list of suggestions for the Media Specialist. I also researched popular books the AHS library has in stock. I completed a list for the Media Specialist to do a display to promote reading. I enjoyed this task. I researched popular books. Then I cross referenced the list with books the Media Center has. I tried to find a variety of genre's and book titles that appeal to male readers.
Break Out Boxes
Do you want your students to, “think outside the box?” Do you want to challenge your students?
The Media Center has Breakout Boxes you can use in your classroom. Breakout Boxes are portable kits that include everything you need to do a scavenger hunt type lesson in the classroom. There are lessons for every school subject. The Breakout kits include lessons and step-by-step instructions.

Things to remember with the Breakout Box lessons: Some of the lessons were created with older Breakout kits. The small lock box can be substituted with the small zipper box and one of the locks. The directional lock can be substituted with the Multilock.
Important: Once you use a Breakout Kit please write the combinations on a sticky note. Then the locks can be opened and reprogrammed for the next lesson.

I observed in the CVES Computer Lab this week. The elementary school has a computer room and the students rotate through the Computer Lab as a special class (like art & PE). This week I observed a kindergarten class. The Computer Lab instructor taught the students to use a coloring and art creation software. The kindergarten students enjoyed the lesson. The younger age group is more comfortable with tablets than a large desktop computer. The students wanted to use their finger to touch the screen instead of using a mouse. The Computer Lab instructor also taught some students how to use the mouse to create their project. I also observed a testing lesson in the Computer Lab. Each grade level participates in Star testing. Star Testing is an assessment program that monitors the student's understanding in math and reading. The results give each teacher a n individualized report on each student. The students rotate through the Computer Lab to do their start testing. I observed a first grade classroom. The students completed a reading assessment. This class also had a tough time with the mouse. They wanted to touch the screen to answer the questions.
